Penguins team up with Pittsburgh schools for mentoring program
The Pittsburgh Penguins have teamed up with Pittsburgh Public Schools for PPS All-Stars, a new mentoring program.
The programs allows all K-8 students and educators to attend a regular season Pens home game for free, and includes mentorship and career development sessions led by players, executives and staff.
Penguins President of Business Operations Kevin Acklin said in a news release that Pittsburgh’s future depends on investing in young people, and in particular on Pittsburgh students.
PPS All-Stars deepens the teams investment to the community, according to the release, and is an addition to their free learn to skate and diversity hockey programs at the Highmark Hunt Armory community rink in Shadyside.
“Through the generous gift of PPS All-Stars, they are removing barriers that in the past prevented access to Penguins games and, more importantly, exposure to the sport of hockey,” said Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Wayne N. Walters in the release.
The program kicks off when the Penguins face the Dallas Stars on Dec. 12, and starting in the new year, the Penguins will host several mentoring sessions at PPG Paints Arena and at various schools in the district. Each eligible PPS student, teacher, and staff will receive access to redeem two tickets to a regular-season home game and vouchers for a complementary food item and drink, courtesy of Aramark.
