Penn State begins beer sales Saturday at Beaver Stadium

Sep. 29—Penn State will begin beer sales at Beaver Stadium on Saturday for the Nittany Lions' Big Ten game against Northwestern, one week after it was approved by the Board of Trustees.

Beer will be available for purchase in 16-ounce cans throughout the stadium, except for areas near the student section around the south end zone.

Penn State did not announce which beers will be sold or how much they will cost. Patrons will be allowed to purchase a maximum of two beers at any one time. All beer locations will be cashless.

All patrons 21 years of age and older who buy beer will be required to show government identification to obtain a wristband. All IDs will be scanned to confirm they are legitimate.

Beer sales will conclude at the end of the third quarter. Patrons will not be permitted to leave the stadium with beer.

Sutherland recognized: Penn State linebacker Jonathan Sutherland has been selected as one of the 156 semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, college football's premier scholar-athlete award.

Going into the fall semester, Sutherland carried a 3.59 grade-point average while pursuing a master's degree in educational leadership. He earlier earned a bachelor's degree in labor and employment relations.

Now in his sixth season, he and quarterback Sean Clifford are the first four-time team captains in Penn State football history.

Sutherland moved from safety to outside linebacker this season and is in his first year as a full-time starter. He has seven tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry.

Candidates for the Campbell Trophy must be a senior or a graduate student in their final year of eligibility, carry a GPA of at least 3.2, have outstanding ability as a first-team player or significant contributor and demonstrate strong leadership and citizenship.

The National Football Foundation will announce 12 to 14 finalists on Oct. 26. Each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2022 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The winner will be announced Dec. 6 in Las Vegas.

Nourzad sits: Penn State guard Hunter Nourzad, a transfer from Cornell, did not play last week in a win over Central Michigan because of minor injuries.

"Yeah, (he has) bumps and bruises," Penn State coach James Franklin said. "We felt like if we could hold him out last week that we'd be able to get him back this week."

Sophomore J.B. Nelson, a transfer from Lackawanna Junior College, spelled starters Landon Tengwall and Sal Wormley against Central Michigan.

"The good thing is J.B. came in and played really well," Franklin said. "We were excited about how he played in the game. We'll see how this week goes. We're hoping to have him (Nourzad) back. If we don't, then we feel confident that J.B. will do the job."
