Although a new era of Penn State basketball felt like it was just getting started, one of the program’s cornerstones is on its way out.

Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry has agreed to become Notre Dame’s next head coach. The move will send the Indiana native back to the Hoosier State, where he previously held coaching positions with Butler and Purdue.

Pat Kraft, Penn State’s athletic director, released a statement around 8 p.m. Wednesday and confirmed Shrewsberry’s departure, though he did not directly name Notre Dame as the coach’s next destination. Kraft said the program has already started a search for its next head coach.

Shrewsberry brought Penn State’s program back to national relevance during the 2022-23 season by guiding the Nittany Lions to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011. Penn State defeated No. 7 seed Texas A&M in the opening round but fell to No. 2 seed Texas.

Once the news hit Twitter Wednesday evening, Penn Staters and college basketball fans alike lamented the departure of the second-year head coach.

While some Penn State fans vented their frustration about Shrewsberry’s reported choice to leave, others took issue with what they see as a lack of investment in the Nittany Lions’ program.

After Kraft confirmed Shrewsberry’s departure, another group of Penn State fans chimed in with their thoughts, ranging from jokes at the program’s expense to continued distaste for the coach’s short tenure in Happy Valley.
