New bereavement support group to meet in Harrison City

After an Irwin area bereavement support group stopped meeting during the pandemic, Harrison City resident Nancy Lohr and members of the New Life Presbyterian Church sought to create their own.

The new bereavement support group will have its first gathering from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 8 at New Life Presbyterian Church, 326 Raymaley Road, Harrison City. Subsequent meetings will take place on the second Tuesday of each month at the same time and place.

Lohr, the group's leader, said she plans to invite guest speakers and run the meetings as open discussions for participants.

"I'm hoping that it helps people in their grief journey because everyone's ... is different," Lohr said.

Lohr added she wants to provide a bereavement group for the public because of the help she has received from similar organizations in the past.

"When you're grieving, it changes your whole world," Lohr said. "By getting together and sharing, we can help each other."

Students raise $1,635 for South Sudan foundation

Fifth grade students in Amanda Hawk's class at Sunrise Estates Elementary School in Penn Township recently completed a reading and a life lesson by raising $1,635 to provide clean drinking water in South Sudan.

The students learned about Salva Sut, a boy living in South Sudan, while reading the book, "A Long Walk to Water," which chronicles his story of survival. He is known as one of the Lost Boys, who walked thousands of miles to a refugee camp. The class decided to hold a fundraiser to support Salva's organization, Water for South Sudan Foundation.

The students set a goal of raising $1,000 and held a schoolwide pajama and movie day. They used the school's Twitter account to reach the outside community and composed emails to ask their families to donate to the cause.
