PennDOT says Fern Hollow Bridge on track to reopen by end of 2022

It’s being called an early holiday gift. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is anticipating the Fern Hollow Bridge reopening before Christmas.

People who live nearby are thrilled.

“It is a Christmas present to be sure,” said Barry Silverman.

Silverman has been watching the progress of the Fern Hollow Bridge over the months and can’t believe how fast it’s gone up.

“When this first went down, we were looking at each other, is this going to be two years, three years, how long is this going to go on? It would be impossible to get it done that fast, but this is amazing,” said Silverman.

This afternoon, 11 News could see crews hard at work.

According to PennDOT’s Steve Cowan, who met with project managers today, pedestrian and bridge railings still need to be installed.

The lighting and line painting also need to be done before the bridge reopens.

“Out for a jog, enjoying the view of our bridge coming back. Got to like that,” said resident Andy Norman. “It eliminated my jogs in the park,  basically. So it’ll be great to have it back,” said Norman.

The bridge over Frick Park connects Regent Square and Squirrel Hill.

It collapsed on Jan. 28, injuring drivers and riders on a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus.

PennDOT said the work will continue. Even when the bridge reopens, there will still be a lot of cleanup to be done.
