Penn's Paquette finishes third in discus at boys state track meet

Penn discus thrower Mike Paquette came oh-so-close, LaVille’s Lincoln Hulsey reached a medal-winning personal best in the pole vault, and Jack Moore of Northridge ran a 3,200-meter race for the ages.

But still, Saturday was a quiet day for most area athletes at the IHSAA boys state track finals.

Paquette, as expected, came the closest of all to winning a state championship at the Indiana University track in Bloomington.  He finished third in the discus, throwing 168 feet, 11 inches and coming up a little more than three feet short of catching Antoine Cooper Jr. of Ben Davis.

► Regionals: Penn reigns in Goshen boys track regional; LaPorte claims its first-ever title at Valparaiso

Cooper reached 172-6.

Paquette was sitting in second place after the preliminary rounds, with an opening round best of 168-7. He needed to find about four feet more to take the lead in the finals.  However, his fourth and fifth efforts were fouls, and his final throw was only a four-inch improvement.

Only eight feet separated the first through fifth-place finishers.

Meanwhile, LaVille’s Hulsey provided one of the biggest surprises of the meet when he finished seventh in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, 6 inches to improve his personal best by half-a-foot.

Just a week earlier, at the Goshen regional, the Lancer sophomore cleared only 13 feet and had to sweat it out to see if he would even qualify for state.

Moore, meanwhile, was sucked into one of the hottest races of the night, and his blistering new personal best of 9 minutes, 3.02 seconds was good for fifth in the 3200-meter run.

It was a seven-runner sprint on the final lap, with Carmel’s Kole Mathison getting the victory in 8:59.05. All seven leaders broke the 9:06 mark.

Moore improved his winning time from the Goshen regional by over 15 seconds.

Speaking of surprises, Mishawaka’s Dentrayives Woods soared to seventh place in the long jump, sailing 22-3, over a foot better than he jumped at the regional.

Penn’s Alec Hardrict ran the fastest 100 meters of his life when he clocked 10.81 in Saturday’s preliminary round.  He then came back to place sixth in the 100-meter finals, clocking 10.87.

LaPorte'S Cole Raymond competes in the 800 meter race during the IHSAA boys track and field state finals on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex, at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

La Porte’s Cole Raymond found himself stuck in a “slow” section of the 800-meter run, so he aggressively led the field through a 56-second opening lap. The Indiana University-bound senior  finished almost as strongly, clocking 1:54.36 for a personal best and a sixth-place overall finish.

Plainfield claimed its first-ever boys state track championship, scoring 61 points for the win.  Brownsburg finished second for a second straight year.

Columbus North’s 4 x 800 relay team set a state meet record, finishing first in 7:37.90.

While Tribune-area athletes did not bring home a lot of medals, several missed by the barest margins. The top nine finishers in each event earned IHSAA awards.

Penn’s 4 x 100 relay finished 11th, and the Kingsman 4 x 800 relay was 12th.  So was Anthony Roberts of Concord in the 1600-meter run, and Northridge’s Jaxon Miller in the 800, each taking 12th.

East Central’s Leo Maxwell won the mental attitude award, meaning East Central athletes were mental attitude award winners in both the boys and girls state meets.
