Pennsylvania man killed when struck by truck near Lewes; 165th death ties 1988 record

A 62-year-old Pennsylvania man was struck and killed by a truck while crossing a highway near Lewes on Friday night, according to Delaware State Police.

The Pennsylvania man was identified by state police on Sunday afternoon as Joseph Francisco of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. Francisco got hit around 9:53 p.m. on Coastal Highway south of Postal Lane, according to police.

He was walking across the highway in the right lane when he was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling in his direct path, police said.

The truck hit the man and trapped him underneath the vehicle, police said. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the man was not using a crosswalk, carrying a light or wearing reflective clothing.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash. Witnesses to this collision should call Sgt. J. Burns by calling 302-703-3269 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333.

Friday's crash was the state's 165th traffic death this year. That ties the 1988 record that saw 165, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation. In 2021, 139 people died on Delaware roads.
