It was a big night for progressive politics in western Pennsylvania, as Sara Innamorato declared victory in the Allegheny County Executive Democratic primary and Matt Dugan upset longtime Allegheny County DA Stephen Zappala.

Channel 11, your Election Night Headquarters, had crews out at campaign events Tuesday night and worked to bring you updates as they came in.

UPDATE 11:50 PM:

Allegheny County currently has 1,295 of 1,324 precincts reporting with the unofficial results read into the database.

Further updates are expected on Thursday.

UPDATE 11:40 PM:

Democrats will maintain their narrow Pennsylvania House majority after winning a special election in the Philadelphia suburbs.

UPDATE 11:25 PM:

With nearly 100% of precincts reporting, Bethany Hallam leads Joanna Doven by over 20,000 votes in the race for Allegheny County Council.

UPDATE 10:35 PM:

While speaking to supporters, incumbent candidate for District Attorney Stephen Zappala, who ran as a Democrat, said that Republicans have made him the nominee.

Democratic candidate Matt Dugan is leading Zappala by nearly 20,000 votes.

UPDATE 10:30 PM:

Sara Innamorato declares victory in the Democratic primary race for Allegheny County Executive. With 91% reporting, Innamorato leads by over 10,000 votes.

UPDATE 10 PM:

With 933 precincts reporting, Matt Dugan continues to lead Stephen Zappala by a large margin with 55% of the vote.

UPDATE 9:50 PM:

Michael Lamb just spoke to supporters and said he called Sara Innamorato to congratulate her. With 611 precincts reporting, Innamorato leads John Weinstein by nearly 6,000 votes. Lamb trails Weinstein by over 10,000. The race is still too close to call at this moment. We’ll let you know as soon as Weinstein or Innamorato speak.

UPDATE 9:45 PM:

Dan McCaffery has won the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania for a vacant seat on the state Supreme Court, according to the Associated Press.

Republican Michael Stender won a special election for a vacant central Pennsylvania seat in the state House of Representatives.

UPDATE 9:10 PM:

With 201 precincts reporting, Matt Dugan leads Steve Zappala by nearly 10,000 votes.

UPDATE 8:45 PM:

In-person ballot results are beginning to come in.

Results will continue to be updated until all materials have been returned.

UPDATE 8:06 PM:

Mail-in and absentee ballots in Allegheny County are now reporting.

UPDATE 8 PM:

The polls are now closed.

Anyone in line at 8 p.m. to vote will be able to do so before the polling location closes. Once polls are closed, poll workers will complete all paperwork, close the machines, and put together materials that will be returned to elections. Next, judges of the election will take those materials to one of eight regional reporting centers. Unofficial results will then be read into the election night database for reporting. Allegheny County expects in-person results to start coming in around 9 p.m.

There are still a few hours left to vote until polls close at 8 p.m.

Allegheny County Director of Communications Amie Downs says there have been no further issues or challenges reported at the polls.

UPDATE 11:50 AM:

Allegheny County has received a few reports of construction and other road closures around a polling place in Pittsburgh and one in Bridgeville. They’ve been in communication with officials at both sites about the issues, according to Amie Downs, Allegheny County director of communications.

Two additional locations were reported as opening late. One was due to the building owner not opening in time and one was due to the judge of elections being late to the polling place, Downs said. The polling places affected were in Munhall and East Pittsburgh and they opened shortly after 7 a.m.

UPDATE 8:31 AM:

Pittsburgh police responded to an altercation involving poll workers and the constable at a Pittsburgh polling place, according to Amie Downs, Allegheny County director of communications. Officers addressed the issue with all parties before leaving.

Some polling places in Allegheny County did not open on time. The Ream Recreation Center in Pittsburgh and Madonna of Jerusalem Church in Sharpsburg were not opened by building owners on time, according to Downs. Both are now open.

In Pittsburgh 16-06, the judge of elections did not arrive and so sheriffs were dispatched to pick up poll materials. A new poll book was opened and voting was underway while they were waiting for that delivery, Downs said.

Calls made to the Elections office this morning were not going through all of the time and some calls were dropped. All of those issues were resolved by 7:15 a.m., Downs said.

According to Amie Downs, Allegheny County director of communications, mail-in ballots have been distributed to county staff. The first phase of canvassing is a review of the declaration envelope to ensure it is signed and dated. Downs says this is the second review as the first one occurred when the ballot was received by elections. If a signature or date is missing, or a date is incorrect, it will be put aside for resolution by Elections staff.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, 77,085 ballots had been returned out of 106,576. Voters have until 8 p.m. this evening to return their ballots.
