Pensacola-area preps: District basketball, Region weightlifting and more scores for Jan. 30-Feb. 4

Here's a roundup of the high school sports results reported for the week of Jan 30-Feb. 4, 2023:

Boys Basketball

Gulf Breeze 84, Navarre 45

Outplaying the Raiders substantially in the first and third quarters, the Dolphins cruised on the road to their 20th win of the season.

Gulf Breeze (20-3) won the first quarter 25-9 before taking the third 30-11. Stats were unavailable.

The Dolphins enter next week's District 1-6A tournament as the top seed and will receive a first-round bye. Meanwhile, No. 5 Navarre (9-15) plays at No. 4 Pace in a quarterfinal game.

West Florida 72, Milton 60

Lumon May Jr. poured in 23 points while Randall Burno notched a double-double to lift the Jaguars to a road win over the Panthers.

Burno collected 14 points and 12 rebounds while May Jr. added six assists and three steals. Amir Young notched 12 points.

District Girls Basketball Roundup: West Florida, Jay claim district crowns, Pine Forest, Pace settle for runner-up

Stats were unavailable for Milton (6-18), who will play a District 1-6A quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Thursday at Crestview. The Panthers are sixth seed while the Bulldogs are seeded third.

West Florida (11-14) will receive a first-round bye in the District 1-4A bracket. The No. 3 Jaguars play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at No. 2 South Walton.

Tate 79, Murphy (Ala.) 73

Winning the fourth quarter by a 30-13 margin, the Aggies mounted a comeback victory over the Panthers. Stats were unavailable.

Tate (16-4) enters the District 1-6A tournament with wins in eight of its last nine games. The No. 2-seed Aggies are host to No. 7 Niceville at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a district quarterfinal.

Jay 55, Pace 48

Current owners of the area's longest winning streak, the Royals closed the regular season with a road win over the Patriots. Stats were unavailable.

Jay (18-3) has won its last 12 games. The team will be the No. 2 seed in the District 1-1A tournament and host No. 7 Northview at 7 p.m. Monday in a quarterfinal matchup.

Pace (11-12) has dropped four of its last five.

Williamson (Ala.) 58, Pensacola 42

The Tigers failed to extend their winning streak to three games after falling on the road to the Lions. Stats were unavailable.

Pensacola (7-18) next plays in a District 1-4A quarterfinal at Walton. The Tigers are fifth seed while the Braves are seeded fourth.

Munroe 66, L.E.A.D. Academy 46

The Lions have fallen in back-to-back games following a 20-point loss to the Bobcats.

Mehki Brown had 23 points to lead Munroe. Stats were unavailable for L.E.A.D. Academy (11-14).

Shining Light Academy 57, West Florida Baptist Academy (N.C.) 35

The Conquerors could not keep pace with the Knights during the championship game of the Eagles Classic Invitational from Pensacola Christian College. Stats were unavailable.

Girls Soccer

District 1-4A Final

No. 1 South Walton 4, No. 2 West Florida 0

The Jaguars could not keep pace with the top seed, taking a shutout road loss to the Seahawks. Stats were unavailable.

Region Soccer: Five boys, four girls Pensacola-area teams qualify for FHSAA State tournament

Entering districts ranked fourth in Region 1-4A, West Florida (10-5-3) will receive an at-large bid and play next week at regionals.

Girls Weightlifting

Region 1-3A meet

Pace's success at districts was a fluke as the team swept the top spots in traditional and Olympic competitions.

With six individual traditional champions, the Patriots captured that event with a team score of 63 points. Navarre (38) placed second, followed by Niceville (34) and Milton (16). Although they had less individual Olympic winners, Pace won by a larger margin after taking the event with 54 points. Niceville (25) was second while Navarre (24) took third.

The Patriots had four lifters capture wins at their respective weight class in both events: Kaila Corbridge (101 pounds), Lani Bennett (110), Shannon Bryan (129) and Dyamond Dixon (unlimited). Meanwhile, Kendall Wise (169) and Madison Misleh (183) won traditional titles while finishing second in Olympic competition. Ryleigh Perkins (199) claimed a runner-up finish in traditional.

Boys Basketball

Tate 74, Escambia 61

The Aggies captured their fourth consecutive win following a double-digit home triumph over the Gators. Stats were unavailable.

Tate (15-4) closes the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Murphy (Ala.). Escambia (8-11) next plays in the District 1-5A tournament as the fourth seed. The Gators play No. 5 Arnold in a quarterfinal game.

Crestview 52, Gulf Breeze 45

The Dolphins lost for the second time in three games after falling on the road against the Bulldogs. Stats were unavailable.

Gulf Breeze (19-3) aims for its 20th win of the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday in its regular-season finale at Navarre.

Pensacola Catholic 58, Central 47

The Crusaders won each of the first three quarters en route to a road win against the Jaguars. Stats were unavailable.

Next up for Pensacola Catholic (9-15) is next week's District 1-3A tournament where the team is No. 6 seed. The Crusaders play at No. 3 Marianna in a quarterfinal matchup. Central (5-19) is the No. 5 seed in the District 1-1A and will play 6 p.m. Monday at No. 4 Freeport.

West Florida Baptist Academy 59, Central Christian Academy (Conn.) 42

In the first of two wins at the Eagles Classic Invitational, the Conquerors raced out to a 36-15 halftime advantage en route to a victory over the Eagles from Pensacola Christian College. Stats were unavailable.

West Florida Baptist Academy 40, Glen Iris Baptist 37

After earning a blowout win in its first game of the Eagles Classic Invitational, the Conquerors outlasted the Swordsmen in a low-scoring affair at Pensacola Christian College.

WFBA led 30-20 at the end of the third quarter before holding on for the victory. Stats were unavailable.

West Florida Baptist Academy (18-7) will play for the tournament championship at 3 p.m. Friday against Shining Light Academy (N.C.).

District 1-4A Semifinals

No. 3 West Florida 47, No. 2 Walton 15

Highlighted by Camryn Spangler's double-double, the Jaguars motored to Friday's district final following a stifling home win against the Braves.

The senior forward paced all players with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Skyy Beeks chipped in 11 points and five assists while Shanie Beeks added eight points.

With wins in five of its last six games, West Florida (11-14) is host to No. 1 South Walton 6 p.m. Friday. The two teams split their two regular-season meetings.

No. 1 South Walton 67, No. 4 Pensacola 56

The Tigers closed the final chapter of their 2022-23 season after falling on the road to the Seahawks. Stats were unavailable.

Pensacola finished its campaign at 11-12, a seven-win improvement from a year ago.

District 1-5A Semifinal

No. 2 Pine Forest 41, No. 3 Booker T. Washington 33

The Eagles proved it's hard to beat a team three times in a season after outlasting the Wildcats from Choctaw High School. Stats were unavailable.

Booker T. Washington (13-11) swept the regular-season series between the two squads, but it is Pine Forest (15-10) who advances to face top-seeded Fort Walton Beach on Friday. However, the Eagles aim to avoid a similar fate after taking both games over the Vikings earlier this year.

Entering districts ranked seventh in Region 1-5A, the Wildcats should be safe in terms of an at-large bid as every team ahead of them have advance to their respective district final.

District 1-6A Semifinals

No. 3 Pace 55, No. 2 Niceville 50

The Patriots march to their second consecutive district final following a narrow road victory against the Eagles. Stats were unavailable.

Improving its record to 18-7 this season, Pace plays at 6 p.m. Friday at No. 1 Crestview for the right to be called district champion.

The two teams split a pair of close meetings during the regular season, with each squad earning a win on the other's home floor. The Patriots earn a 57-52 win on Dec. 1 before the Bulldogs returned the favor with a 54-50 triumph on Jan. 13.

No. 1 Crestview 69, No. 5 Milton 41

The Panthers saw their season come to a close following a blowout road loss to the Bulldogs.

The visitors dropped the first quarter 19-5 before falling 20-9 in the fourth. Stats were unavailable.

District 1-1A Semifinals

No. 1 Jay 60, No. 4 Freeport 43

The Royals reeled in their fifth win in a row after beating the Bulldogs at Paxton High School. Stats were unavailable.

Jay (17-3) looks to claim its first district title since the 2019-20 season when it plays at 7 p.m. Friday at No. 2 Paxton.

No. 2 Paxton 35, No. 3 Central 22

The Jaguars wrapped up their 2022-23 campaign with a double-digit road loss to the Bobcats. The visitors lead by two after eight minutes of action, but were outscored 20-5 through the second and third quarters.

Seven players scored for Central (13-11), lead by Lily Mathews' six points.

Boys Basketball

Pensacola 60, Milton 44

Ten players scored for the Tigers during their home win over the Panthers.

Brian Harris and Dacaris Brown had 15 and 12 points, respectively, to lead Pensacola (7-17), who has won back-to-back games. Stats were unavailable for Milton (6-17).

The Panthers are host to West Florida at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to end their regular season. The Tigers play at 6 p.m. Friday at Williamson (Ala.).

TUESDAY

The Patriots pummeled the Dolphins at home to advance to the next round. Stats were unavailable.

After losing in its last five games, Gulf Breeze ends the season with an 11-12 record. Pace (17-7) plays on Wednesday at No. 2 Niceville.

No. 5 Milton 34, No. 4 Navarre 32

The Panthers collected a road victory to knock off the Raiders for the first time in three meetings this season. Stats were available.

On the outside looking in to a state playoff spot, Navarre ends the season at 15-9. Milton (11-12) plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday at No. 1 Crestview.

Boys Basketball

Gulf Breeze 67, Fairhope (Ala.) 58

Winning the fourth quarterfinal by a 23-10 margin, the Dolphins racked up possibly its best triumph of the season after beating the Pirates.

Ranked 13th in Alabama according to MaxPreps, Fairhope was 24-0 before falling on Tuesday. One of its wins came at Gulf Breeze's expense in a 56-51 result on Dec. 21.

The Dolphins (19-2) plays its final two regular-season games on the road, beginning with at 7 p.m. Thursday at Crestview.

Booker T. Washington 46, Crestview 39

Establishing an advantage thanks to a 17-5 second quarter, the Wildcats hung for a home victory against the Bulldogs. Stats were unavailable.

Escambia 64, Choctaw 62

The Gators erased a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit to earn a comeback home win over the Indians. Escambia trailed 52-38 at the end of the third before winning the final quarter 26-10.

Mi-Kuse Robinson sealed the win with a steal and go-ahead dunk in the game’s final moments. The senior forward led the Gators rally, scoring a team-best 19 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Tyquan Gilchrist and Trevion Killette added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Escambia (8-10) ends the regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tate.

Paxton 48, L.E.A.D. Academy 30

The Lions had their three-game winning streak snapped in a home loss against the Bobcats. Kenyon Simmons and Trevor Varnum had 12 and 10 points, respectively to lead Paxton.

District 1-3A Semifinal

No. 3 Pensacola Catholic 4, No. 2 North Bay Haven Academy 1

Behind a career-best performance from Jacob Wilkinson, the Crusaders marched into the District 1-3A Final following a convincing win against the Buccaneers from the Publix Sports Complex in Panama City Beach.

Wilkinson fired four balls into the back of the net, scoring twice in the first half and two more times in the second. The senior’s previous best performance was a hat trick on Jan. 5 against Pine Forest.

Wiley Collins, Ian Stinnett and Nicholson Whitner each had an assist.

Pensacola Catholic (7-11-1) will try to punch its ticket into the state postseason at 6 p.m. Wednesday at No. 1 Walton. Looking for back-to-back district titles, the Crusaders are in a win-or-go-home scenario as the team is ranked 15th in Region 1-3A.

District 1-5A Semifinal

No. 1 Arnold 3, No. 4 Booker T. Washington 1

One goal in the second half wasn’t enough against the state’s top-ranked team as the Wildcats fell to the Marlins at Escambia High School.

Arnold scored all three of its goals in the first half. Stats were unavailable.

Booker T. Washington (8-6-3) looks ahead to the Region 1-5A tournament as the team will receive an at-large bid.

Girls Soccer

No. 2 West Florida 1, No. 3 Bay 0

A first-half goal was all the Jaguars needed to advance to the District 1-4A Final as they collected a shutout win over the Tornadoes. It’s West Florida’s seventh shutout victory over the season.

The Jaguars (10-4-3) will play No. 1 South Walton at 6 p.m. Thursday for the district title. Last season, the Seahawks defeated West Florida 2-1 to win the district championship.

Boys Basketball

Booker T. Washington 59, Choctaw 56

The Wildcats swept the season series against the Indians following a narrow road victory. Stats were unavailable.
