The Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program recently announced the opening of the 2023-2024 Community Grant Program funding opportunity. This program will fund action projects that serve to restore, preserve, connect, inform and educate regarding local waterways.

The PPBEP Community Grant Program will award $250,000 in total funding to help restore and protect our waters. Award amounts will range from $10,000 to $50,000. Local governments or non-state entities (educational institutions and 501(c)3s) are eligible to submit a proposal for projects located within the Perdido and/or Pensacola watershed within Escambia, Santa Rosa, and/or Okaloosa counties.

The program is a stakeholder-driven, science-based organization charged with restoring and preserving the Pensacola and Perdido Bay systems and their associated watersheds. PPBEP is guided by a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan, which serves as a blueprint for the restoration and preservation of the area and waterways. Through these actions, PPBEP’s vision is to create a healthy and sustainable environment, economy and community.

The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, and projects must be completed by May 31, 2024. Priority consideration will be given to “shovel ready” action projects and projects that inform, engage and educate the community. Projects that leverage match, including volunteer efforts, will also receive priority consideration. The 2023-2024 grant recipients will be recognized at the Estuary Program’s Community Grant Symposium on Sept. 22 at the Bayview Community Center during National Estuaries Week.

Santa Rosa County Animal Services is participating in a contest by Invisible Fence Brand for a chance to win $10,000. Invisible Fence Brand's mission is to keep pets safely contained and in their forever home.

July kicked off National Lost Pet Prevention Month, an observance dedicated to keeping dogs and cats safe at home. According to the American Humane Society, approximately 10 million dogs and cats are lost in the U.S. every year, and the chance of them being reunited with their families significantly increases for microchipped pets.

In honor of Lost Pet Prevention Month, Invisible Fence Brand is inviting communities to nominate their local animal shelters to give them a chance to win a grand prize of $10,000 donated on behalf of the brand.

Visit invisiblefence.com to nominate SRCAS by Aug. 31 and spread the word to help the organization receive more nominations.
