Pensions Delivered to Elderly Amid Shelling in East Ukraine

Pensions continued to be provided to older residents in the Donbas region of Ukraine, despite continued attacks in the area, footage released on June 7 shows.

Footage captured by Current Time shows scenes in the town of Krasnohorivka, located in Donetsk, a region where Russian-backed separatists held significant territory since before the invasion and where conflict has intensified in recent weeks.

In the footage, journalist Borys Sachalko described delivering the pensions as a “special operation” that involved collecting local administrative officials and bringing them safely to pick up the money. Sachalko also said the head of the local post office travels with an armed guard now due to the dangerous environment, according to the translation.

While most people have left Krasnohorivka, it is mostly pensioners who have remained, Sachalko adds. When asked if she could tell whether artillery fire in the area was incoming or outgoing, an older women replied: “Not anymore. I used to know.”

“There’s no point knowing who is firing and where. Whatever will be, will be. It’s fate. You can’t avoid death,” she added, according to the Current Time translation. Credit: Current Time via Storyful
