The Pentagon has confirmed that images and videos showing unidentified flying objects buzzing over Navy warships off the coast of California were taken by Navy personnel.

The photos and videos were gathered by the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Task Force and leaked to filmmaker Jeremy Corbell.

One of the videos recorded in 2019 shows what appears to be pyramid shaped objects hovering above a Navy destroyer, according to Mystery Wire. Mr Corbell said the video was taken on deployment from the USS Russell.

He said he verified the video’s authenticity after gaining information from a Pentagon intelligence briefing in which officials confirmed the footage was shot by US Navy personnel, according to New York Post.

Mr Corbell said that the briefing listed multiple events involving several ships in July 2019 and there were some drone sightings on 14 and 15 July.

“And by the way, on the other ships, they had different things that happened. So some were just like lights that did figure-eights and patterns and 90 degree turns. Others were like a different colour light, like red,” he told Mystery Wire.

A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that the photos and videos were taken by Navy personnel and the UAP Task Force has “included these incidents in their ongoing examinations.”

This comes just a week after Admiral Michael Gilday, the chief of naval operations, said he had no idea where the drones that chased US destroyers originated.

The Pentagon announced last year the establishment of the UAP Task Force to “improve its understanding of, and gain insight into, the nature and origins of UAPs.” The mission of the task force “is to detect, analyse and catalog UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to US national security.”

A report by the task force is expected to be released by June.
