The Pentagon was placed in lockdown Tuesday morning around 11 a.m. after reports of gunfire near a platform at its Metro station.

An announcement at the Pentagon said the facility was on lockdown to "police activity," the Associated Press reported.

The incident occurred at a bus platform at the facility's transit center, the AP reported.

"The Pentagon currently is on lock down due to an incident at the Pentagon Transit Center," the Pentagon Force Protection Agency said in statement. "We are asking the public to please avoid the area. More information will be forthcoming."

One person was down but their condition was not known, the AP reported, citing two sources who were not authorized to speak publicly about the situation.

The Arlington County Fire Department said it saw "multiple patients" and said the scene was still "active" as of 11:27 a.m.

The shooter was shot by a Pentagon police officer and was never inside the building, a PFPA official told Politico reporter Laura Seligman. Another police officer was injured and was receiving medical attention, Seligman tweeted, citing the PFPA source.
