People are moving to NC from these 10 states the most, new census data shows

North Carolina had the fourth-highest number of residents move from other states in 2022, new U.S. Census data shows.

But which states did people move from to North Carolina the most?

According to U.S. Census data released last week, North Carolina gained 341,582 people from other states in 2022, year-over year. Only Florida, Texas and California had more residents move from other states.

Most new residents — 34,920 — came from Florida, followed closely by Virginia, with 33,919 residents moving from the Old Dominion.

The new census data also shows that 58,370 people moved to North Carolina from outside of the U.S. in 2022.

A 2023 study by United Van Lines found that the No. 1 reason (30.83%) people moved to North Carolina in 2022 was to be closer to family. Another 29.64% moved to the Tar Heel State for work, while 24.36% moved for retirement.

The study also shows that 44.67% of the people who moved to North Carolina in 2022 had incomes of $150,000 or more. Another 24.87% had incomes of $100,000 to $149,999.
