People Are Obsessed With This Fantastical Pink Porcelain Pantry

"Pantry." Even the very word sounds blah: A dark, low-ceilinged space filled wall to wall with jars of bland, beige dry goods and tinned foods somehow preserved to survive a nuclear apocalypse. But, as anyone familiar with the delightfully maximalist style of Michelle Nussbaumer well knows, in the designer's talented hands there's no room for boring. In her design for House Beautiful's Kitchen (or, we should say, Kitchens—there are four) of the Year, Nussbaumer proves this by making us lose our minds over a humble pantry—well, two.

Of course, a pantry by the woman who commissioned a custom wall mural to go above her countertop and swathed Ikea cabinets in an ikat print of her design is no stale hideaway. In a design inspired by none other than the Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen—nothing says elevating the ordinary than infusing your storage closet with a bit of the royal—Nussbaumer designed a majestic archway of plate racks in a rosy hue to store her mother's porcelain plates, arranged around a quartet of hand-painted tureens. Along the pantry's two side walls, pink shelves hold even more porcelain, including some inherited from Nussbaumer's grandmother—which, the designer says, she "likes to mix with salad plates from Target." A graphic, chevron floor brings a touch of deco.

Fine china not your thing? (Weird, but okay.) We've got something for you, too: a pantry in the more traditional sense of the word, chock full of everything from dried lentils (in an assortment of colors, of course) to spicy peppers, preserved in Chinese tea jars à la old world candy shop against a wallpaper by Mitchell Black. The same pink hue makes its shelves pop.

With storage spaces like these, you'd be forgiven for making midnight snacking a habit—or just wiling away the day in the pantry. After all, as Nussbaumer says, "it's fun to have fantasy moments."
