After five years, Hamilton just became available to anyone with a Disney+ subscription or a seven-day free trial.
To recap: In 2015, Miranda premiered Hamilton, the hip-hop-infused story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers, performed by an almost completely POC cast. Seemingly overnight, the world turned upside down, transforming Miranda and original cast members like Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr., and Renée Elise Goldsberry into even bigger household names.
The filmed version of Hamilton was supposed to open in movie theaters late next year for a larger audience to enjoy. However, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the musical was shared on Disney+ a bit early instead. Given that Broadway is shut down indefinitely and affordable tickets to Hamilton have been almost impossible to get for years, the film version is a chance for a new audience to experience its magic for themselves.
Seeing Hamilton for the first time has been an emotional ride for some people, who have been posting their reactions and tagging Miranda all day. "I just watched #Hamilton for the first time ever and oh my gosh it’s so good!! I laughed and I cried and just, wow I can only imagine how incredible it is to experience the show in a live theatre setting! Absolutely brilliant!" one person wrote on Twitter.
Another posted a picture of his toddler completely transfixed by the production, writing, "Hey @Lin_Manuel I thought you might appreciate this. Our daughter Everly (16 months old) is enraptured by her first chance to see #Hamilton this morning. Thank you!"
If you're still wondering whether or not Hamilton could possibly live up to the hype, one Twitter user was right there with you. “My expectations were so sky high I feared there was no way they'd be met,” one new fan tweeted. “But Lin Manuel, every actor, that AMAZING company, every single person involved SO EXCEEDED every expectation I had!!”
What time is it? Showtime!
