Warm weather and mosquitoes are basically synonymous at this point. Once the weather starts getting nice, you know that those pesky insects aren't too far behind. If you're not into coating yourself with bug repellant or lighting citronella candles everywhere, there's an incense-based alternative worth checking out.

Murphy's Mosquito Sticks, as well as their entire line of products, are eco-friendly- I stan a sustainable alternative to bug repellents. The sticks are made with natural products and don't include DEET, which is found in many bug repellents. While Consumer Reports has said that there's no "reliable evidence" DEET causes cancer, roughly 25 percent of people still try to avoid it, the brand found.

The manager of sales and marketing for Murphy's Naturals, Stewart Feeeman, told Today that the company believes that "with the right essential oils, you can have products that work just as effectively without the DEET chemical."

Each tube of Mosquito Sticks includes 12 incense sticks that are perfect to use during cookouts (PSA: July Fourth is literally less then two weeks away). The sticks can last for 2-2 1/2 hours apiece, which isn't as long as a citronella candle, but long enough that you're not jumping up to replace them every half hour.

Freeman recommended placing the incense along the perimeter of wherever you're hanging out to build a barrier against the mosquitoes.

One customer wrote: "Bought these to try at the lake house to keep the deck clear of pests. I was more than impressed by how well they worked that I didn’t even need to spray myself when venturing outdoors when we had the incense sticks burning!" The reviewer wrote that "they don’t always stay lit; you need to check once in awhile. But they smell great, and I love not having to use chemicals on my skin because of them."

Overall, the product has 4.3 stars on Amazon and the majority of customers are very satisfied. But take heed to the shopper's warning and make sure to check the incense every now and then.

That doesn't mean you should throw out your go-to bug spray: Even though Murphy's doesn't believe in using DEET, the CDC does. The organization recommends using products with DEET, picadarin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or 2-undecanone to keep mosquitoes at bay.
