People of Ukraine and Zelenskyy awarded Charlemagne Prize

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine have been awarded the annual European Charlemagne Prize for protecting European values.

Quote: "The International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen 2023 will be awarded to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, and the people of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian people are the victims of an unspeakably brutal Russian war of aggression that contravenes international law. The people, under the leadership of their president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, are fighting to defend not only the sovereignty of their country and the lives of its citizens, but also Europe and European values."
Details: The citation notes that Zelenskyy has managed to gather the free world around Ukraine. He is "a motivator, communicator, driving force and anchor between Ukraine and its vast array of supporters," and is also a diplomat who can be an articulate critic.
"Zelenskyy displays courage, leadership and tactical sensitivity, and exemplifies a new, clear and unambiguous political style," the press release states.
The organisers of the event believe that the President of Ukraine provides "support and a role model for his people". Resisting hopelessness and despair, he ensures everyday necessities, vital defence equipment, and confidence in a free, independent and sovereign Ukraine which is part of the European family of nations.
They are convinced that Zelenskyy "gives both Ukraine and the EU strength to believe in this ideal", making him a role model for Europeans as well.
In awarding Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people the 2023 Charlemagne Prize, the Board of Directors of the Society for the Conferring of the Charlemagne Prize is emphasising that Ukraine is part of Europe and that its people and government representatives, headed by Zelenskyy, support and defend European values and therefore deserve this encouragement to enter swiftly into negotiations on joining the European Union.
