Peoria man identified as person killed in encounter with police

A Peoria man died in an officer-involved shooting with Peoria police on Monday evening.

An autopsy on 59-year-old Samuel V. Richmond, of North Bergan Avenue, determined he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body and died instantly, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.

The Peoria Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter alert at about 10:12 p.m. in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Park in the 800 block of West McBean Street, according to police and Harwood.

Upon arrival, officers were involved in a shooting with the victim, the coroner said. Officers began life-saving measures, and medics from the Peoria Fire Department and Advanced Medical Transport arrived and continued resuscitation efforts. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

This case is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
