Peoria police seek help in finding vehicle possibly linked to 2022 homicide

PEORIA — Peoria police are seeking the public's help in solving an Oct, 22, 2022, fatal shooting in South Peoria.

Detectives believe they have identified a vehicle they think was used in the fatal shooting of Couriaun L. Atkins, 23, of Peoria, who died after being shot multiple times.

The Peoria Police Department responded to two ShotSpotter alerts that indicated a total of 16 shots fired in the 2900 block of West Seibold Street around 2:36 a.m. The officers found Atkins outside of a residence with gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving measures taken by police, Atkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, police released a picture of a 2016 Dodge Charger SRT that has a vehicle ID number of 2C3CDXEJXGH129689. The car was stolen Oct. 8, 2022, from a car dealership in Mattoon.

"The vehicle is identified as an SRT trim model with '392' badging on both sides of the vehicle. The vehicle is currently reported as a stolen motor vehicle and also displayed a fictitious license plate. The current whereabouts of the vehicle are unknown," said Semone Roth in a news release from the department.

Anyone with information on the vehicle or this case is asked to contact Detective Scott Hulse of the PeoriaPolice Department at (309) 494-8391, tip411 (anonymous), or Crime Stoppers (anonymous) at (309) 673-9000.
