Marlins select former Amsterdam Mohawk and Herkimer College General Dale Stanavich in eighth round of draft

Former Herkimer College General Dale Stanavich heard his name called Monday on the second day of Major League Baseball's annual entry draft.

Stanavich, a left-handed pitcher from Amsterdam, was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 232nd pick in the eighth round of the draft. Working from the Rutgers University bullpen as a senior this spring, Stanavich was an All-Big Ten selection with 10 saves, a 2.10 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings. He also worked a closer last summer for the Brewster Whitecaps' Cape Cod League championship team.

Amsterdam native Dale Stanavich, pictured pitching for Herkimer College at the NJCAA's 2019 Region III Tournament at Veterans Memorial Park in Little Falls, was selected by the Miami Marlins Monday in the eighth round of Major League Baseball's entry draft.

Stanavich also pitched for the Amsterdam Mohawks during the 2018 and 2019 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League seasons, helping his hometown team win its most recent championship in 2019, and returned to the team for its lone Independent Collegiate Baseball League season in the summer of 2020.

Stanavich transferred to Herkimer after redshirting at Marshall University as a freshman in 2018. He threw a complete game in his only junior college start but went 2-0 with six saves and a 0.59 ERA while striking out 64 batters in 30 2/3 innings in 12 total appearances for the Generals. He was also six-for-14 as a hitter, scored three runs, and stole five bases in seven attempts.

Stanavich signed papers to attend Rutgers prior to the 2020 season as part of Steve Owens' first recruiting class following coaching stops at SUNY-Cortland, Le Moyne College and Bryant University. He was selected by @_theJBB, the social media offshoot of Noah Sharp's JuCo Baseball Blog, as the preseason Pitcher of the Year for NJCAA Division III before the 2020 season was canceled at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Stanavich was the second Capital District left-hander drafted Monday. The Pittsburgh Pirates picked Michael Kennedy from Troy High School with the 110th selection in the fourth round. The 17-year-old graduated last month and had signed to attend Louisiana State University.

Stanavich is the fourth former General to have been drafted. Pitcher Willie Gabay was selected by the New York Yankees in the 15th round of the 2012 draft, and teammate Hassan Evans, an outfielder and hard-throwing pitcher, was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the 38th round that year but did not sign. The Texas Rangers selected pitcher Jacob Shortslef in the 26th round in 2015.

The PGCBL had five former players chosen Monday, led by Albany Dutchmen Luke Gold (Detroit Tigers, fifth round, Boston College) and Ben Metzinger (Milwaukee Brewers, seventh round, University of Louisville). Former Auburn Doubleday Matt Brosky (Youngstown State University) was chosen by the Rangers three picks ahead of Stanavich in the eighth round, and the Rangers used their 10th-round pick to select Kennesaw State University outfielder Josh Hatcher who played for the Utica Blue Sox in 2019.

The draft started with its first two rounds Sunday and concludes with rounds 11-20 Tuesday.

Former Blue Sox player picked by Rangers

The Texas Rangers used their final Monday selection to pick Josh Hatcher, a senior outfielder at Kennesaw State University and a former 289 overall. The left-handed-hitter transferred to Kennesaw State for his final college season after playing on Mississippi State University's 2021 national championship team.

An Atlantic Sun Conference all-star and third-team All-America, Hatcher batted .391 with 15 home runs in 64 games this spring.

Hatcher played 21 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League games in Utica following his sophomore season at Mississippi State in 2019. Playing first base and right field, he batted .364 with four home runs and 27 RBI and hit 10 doubles.

Hatcher was previously drafted in the 39th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers coming out of high school in Georgia in 2017.
