From perfect games to 56-point outbursts to upset overtime wins, the area had it all

SWIMMING

Northeast Classic

Stow's Alex Cimera won the boys 100- and 200-yard freestyles Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Firestone's Jonny Marshall won the boys 100 butterfly and Brecksville's Olena Sadovska took home top honors in the girls 100 breaststroke.

The 200 medley relay of Peter Helmuth, Boston Sullivan, T.J. Bragg and Ryan Ehlers won for North Canton Hoover.

Hudson's boys team finished second at the 46-team event.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Walsh Jesuit 39, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 37

The Warriors (10-2, 5-0) picked up a key Crown Conference win with defense against the host Lions (4-7, 3-2).

Walsh forced NDCL into 23 turnovers and limited the Lions to 16-for-50 shooting from the floor.

“It definitely wasn’t one of the prettiest games, but a win’s a win,” Warriors coach Maggie Ferrando said. “I told the girls if we find a way to win down the stretch, that makes a real quality team. We came up with crucial plays, meaning deflections, meaning boards. It was the little things.”

Megan Taraba (10 points, nine rebounds) and Kara Courtad (7, 11) paced the Warriors.

Melissa Brownlee (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Raegann Leininger (12, 11) led the way for the Lions.

Highland 59, Kent Roosevelt 35

The Hornets (15-0, 9-0) inched closer to their first Suburban League American Conference title behind Grace Madison (19 points, five blocks) and Aleena VanKirk (12 points). The Rough Riders (3-8, 3-6) were paced by Katie Keller's nine points.

Stow 66, Toledo Rogers 33

Kristin Chmielewski (24 points) had another big day for the Bulldogs (9-6) in the Classic in the City in Columbus.

Hudson 46, Western Reserve Academy 40

Delaney DiGeronimo scored 15 points and Ali Menendez chipped in 11 to lead the host Explorers.

Copley 40, Toledo Start 39 (OT)

Junior point guard Libby Blanchard made two free throws with about 20 seconds to go to lift Copley to victory in the Classic in the Country at Berlin Hiland.

Emily Kerekes had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Kami Ayoup scored 10 points for Copley (9-5).

"Toledo Start is super athletic and played a pressure defense for 36 minutes. After we got used to it early in the game, I thought we adjusted very well," Copley coach Mark Dente said.

Archbishop Hoban 64, Westerville North 29

Lanae Riley scored 19 points, Adrena Gordon contributed 12 points and Izzy Callaway had 11 points to lead the Knights to a win in the Classic in the Country at Berlin Hiland. Hoban's Rylee Bennett had nine points and Erica King chipped in eight.

St. Vincent-St. Mary 55, Jackson 45

Jazmin Torres scored 19 points and Cameron Jones had 17 points to lead STVM. Emma Dretke (16 points) and Lauren Pallotta (13) paced Jackson.

Lakota West 38, Medina 35

The Bees (10-5) picked up solid performances from Hailey Tripp (11 points, three assists), Olivia Klanac (12 points) and Leora Owings (seven points, nine rebounds) in the Classic in the Country at Berlin Hiland.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tallmadge 71, Coventry 43

Kyle Ries scored 22 points for the Blue Devils (7-3) in the Spectrum Orthopaedics Classic at Hoover. Teammate Collin Dixon (13 points) also scored in double figures.

Manchester 49, Norton 43 (OT)

Jordan Schindewolf scored 15 points for Manchester (9-6) and Daniel Sensius added 10. Nate Dobben and Cole Newman each had 10 points for Norton (5-3).

Buckeye 79, Elyria Catholic 69

Senior Danny Flood scored 56 points to surpass 1,000 career points and lead the host Bucks (7-4) past the Panthers (7-5). Flood made eight 3-pointers. EC senior Jack Kenneally also surpassed 1,000 career points.

WRESTLING

Husky Invitational

Jack Dinwiddie (106), Jaxon Joy (120), Mason Brugh (126), David Shue (138), Nick Humphrys (144), Louis Schaffer (175), Coen Grimm (190) and Aaron Ries (285) won individual titles to pace Wadsworth, which ran away with the team title.

Boardman Spartan Tournament

Chase Pluhar (132 pounds), Manny Scordos (144) and Max Vanadia (215) won individual titles and led Brecksville to the team title. Codie Cuerbo (113), Tyler Lillard (165) and Dylan Fishback (190) won crowns for Aurora, which finished second.

Maumee Bay Classic

Pablo Castro (132) and Blake Schaffer (190) won individual titles to lead Louisville to a runner-up finish. James Scavuzzo (157) won for Highland, which finished third. Kyle Snider was champ at 215 for CVCA.

RJ Sochia Memorial

Mogadore finished second behind champions Brady Funk (113), Tyler Knight (190), Michael Lowe (215) and Tyler Schellenbarger (285).

BOYS BOWLING

Rootstown Rover Invitational

Tallmadge's Gavin Warren rolled a 300 game and also compiled the high series with a 781 in the 20-team event at Spins Lanes in Kent. Boardman swept the team races.

GYMNASTICS

Greater Cleveland Conference Championship

Jenna Delrio (vault and bars) and Bree Vargo (beam, floor) were double winners for Brunswick and led the Blue Devils to a team title.
