Performance art project that premieres Saturday includes work by two Purdue students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. − A multidisciplinary art project that includes three Purdue graduate students will be performed throughout Indiana. It premieres Saturday at the Art Museum of Lafayette.

The art collaboration, known as "Reimagined Journeys," combines the talents of a musician, a painter and three poets to create an exhibit focused on the theme of journeys, according to a release.

"Journeys is a broad theme that each artist could interpret through their own perspective, background and personal experiences," the release said. "Observers will find these poems, paintings and song not only explore ideas of physical journeys, but also express internal journeys of growth and change, discomfort and regret."

The poets, Kanika Ahuja, JK Anowe, and Logan February -- the first and last of which are MFA candidates at Purdue University -- each wrote a poem inspired by the exhibit's theme. Bekki Canine, the painter of the group, utilized the theme to create three paintings using collaged pieces of sheet music from Carl Koelling, composer of the song "Dangerous Journey," which inspired this exhibit.

According to the release, once the poems and paintings were completed, the artists exchanged works.

"They then moved beyond their own interpretations and created new paintings and poems inspired by the imagery, ideas and words of the other artists’ work," the release said.

Musician Sheeza created a new interpretation of Koelling's song with an acoustic guitar, a saxophone and added vocals.

According to the release, each venue of the exhibit will host an exhibition of the paintings and printed poems, as well as a live musical performance and poetry readings.

The schedule for "Reimagined Journeys" is as follows:

  • 4:30 p.m. June 17, Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, 102 S 10th St., Lafayette, Indiana
