Pernice, Hoch grab early lead at Bass Pro Shops Legends

Tom Pernice Jr. and Scott Hoch teamed up to shoot a 9-under 62 on Friday to grab the first-round lead at the PGA Tour Champions Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf in Ridgedale, Mo.

Three teams trail by one shot in the unique tournament. Half the field played Friday at the Ozarks National course and the other half played at the Top of the Rock par-3 course. On Saturday, the teams will switch courses, then all teams will play Sunday on Top of the Rock.

The top score on the par-3 course was posted by the team of Ken Tanigawa and Gene Sauers -- an 8-under 46. They are one of the three teams a shot behind the leaders, with Shaun Micheel-Loren Roberts and Roger Chapman-David Frost posting 8-under 63s on Ozarks National.

Only Chapman and Frost have played as partners before, participating together twice previously in this event. They lost by one stroke in 2016. Their round included six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. The other two teams at 8 under each posted eight birdies and 10 pars.

Among the teams tied for fifth at 7 under is the brother tandem of Bart and Brad Bryant. Playing for the fourth time together, they competed at Ozarks National. Scott Parel and Larry Mize posted the same 7-under 64 score, while Paul Goydos and Kevin Sutherland shot a 7-under 47 on Top of the Rock to round out the top five.

Pernice and Hoch, playing as teammates for the first time, used a run of five straight birdies on Nos. 8-12 to take control in best ball. They birdied half the holes on the course and did not post a bogey.

Defending champions Paul Broadhurst and Kirk Triplett shot a 4-under 50 at Top of the Rock, good enough for a tie for 11th.
