Perry’s Myers beats state qualifier, Jayettes soccer gets first win

Both on an individual and team level, Perry made some good memories this week. (Note: Events covered April 10 - April 16)

Girls Track

Points were hard to come by at the April 10 meet in Carroll, but not without shining moments for the Jayettes headlined by sophomore Taryn Nehring. Overall, the team landed in 10th place of 10 schools.

After setting her season PR in the 400-meter dash last week to climb the state leaderboard, Nehring took third place with a time of 28.75 seconds. Adding to her portfolio, she also set her time to beat in the 100-meter dash with 14.21 seconds, good for sixth place. That gives her the team’s best times in all three sprint events.

The Davis Relays were back in Perry on Thursday where a couple of Bluejays found themselves in the winner’s circle.

After earning silver in their meet the previous week in Woodward, sophomores Owen Myers and Renzo Saenz climbed one notch higher with the top times of the day in the 400-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash, respectively.

Saenz cruised to a new personal record of 11.68 seconds, giving him a cushion of 0.06 seconds over Des Moines Christian’s Tate Platte.

Myers’ win was similarly tight as he was in-stride with Boone’s Vinny Hayes in a photo finish. But at 58.26 seconds, he beat out last year’s state qualifier by 0.59 seconds. Had Myers also ran the 400- meter dash, his personal record time would have gave him nearly two seconds of cushion to win over Thursday’s top time. But as he held out, Geren Kenney pushed his way into third place with a season PR of 57.18 seconds. That was half a second behind first place.

Boys Soccer (2-1)

Splitting their first two games of the season, the Bluejays bought themselves their second straight win with a 2-0 advantage April 11 over Winterset (0-3) in the Jays’ home opener.

Anthony Chavez and Sergio Sanchez split the game open with their two goals in the second half. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Luis Castro hasn’t allowed a point through for the past two games as he has recorded 17 straight saves including seven against the Huskies.

Girls Soccer (1-6)

After battling through six shutout losses to start the season, the Jayettes collected their first win of the season thanks to Jennifer Ramos’ solo goal against Benton (3-2). Not only was it Perry’s first point of 2023, but was also the junior midfielder’s first career goal at the varsity level.

Last season, Perry had two wins against teams with a combined 2-25 record. Benton came into the game with three games which they won by a combined 20-0.

Boys Golf

Perry saw some week-over-week improvement from their season-opener.

After hitting 257 at the Perry Golf & Country Club on April 6, the team gathered again on April 11 to hit a combined 246. Both landed the Bluejays in third place in the triangular events. Caden Heck and Kain Killmer have taken turns leading the team, with the former starting his season with 47 strokes while Killmer’s 48 led the team in the second outing.

Girls Golf

The Jayettes’ best score last season was 214 strokes, which they scored with a home-course advantage for their lone first place finish.

This year, they’ve set the bar higher (or lower?) with a day shooting 202 while visiting Pleasantville on April 11. With top-four performances from juniors Addison Huntington (48 strokes, 2nd); Kaylee Wuebker (49, 3rd); and Zoey Vail (50, 4th); Perry held a two-swing advantage over Carlisle.

Notably, Perry’s top-performing trio all set new nine-hole lows. Wuebker’s score was a remarkable seven strokes below her best mark last season.
