OUR CALL

Hotline editors weigh in on the stories that drive the day

• Rick Perry is such a quitter. The same day he announced he'd retire, Branstad announced he'd hired a campaign manager in pursuit of his 6th term.

• Landrieu is still outraising him, but Cassidy is closing the gap. And his campaign is quick to point out that his second quarter totals are nearly identical to what Sen. David Vitter posted at this point in 2009.

• If we had to bet on one Wisconsin Republican to run for president in 2016, our money would be on Scott Walker over Ryan. But Ryan's door is always open, simply by virtue of his fundraising abilities. He pulls in big money every quarter -- and it's not that phony mail solicitation money that costs so much to raise.

HAIR OF THE DOG

FRESH BREWED BUZZ

  • "As legal and public pressure mounts over the use of Executive Mansion resources" by VA's first family, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) "late last week reimbursed the state for nearly $2,400 in food and household supplies used by his children" (Richmond Times-Dispatch).

  • Ex-NY Gov./NYC comp. candidate Eliot Spitzer (D) "made his first foray onto the campaign trail in a circus-like appearance at Union Square" on Monday, "where dozens of reporters and TV cameras gathered in the summer heat" (Wall Street Journal).

  • Teresa Heinz Kerry "was upgraded to fair condition" on Monday, one day after suffering "a grand mal seizure of unknown origin, 'an electrical storm in the brain'" (NBC News).

  • SC Gov. Nikki Haley (R) "on Monday said she was physically abused as a girl by a child-care provider, offering a rare, personal disclosure that she said was meant to underscore the challenge any community faces in protecting its children" (Greenville News).

  • "Honey, I shrunk the Obama data machine" (Politico).

  • "Gay-Marriage Campaigners Reveal Their Next Steps" (The Atlantic).

SWIZZLE CHALLENGE

  • The U.S. granted independence to the Philippines on 7/4/46. (Brian Bartlett points out that they now celebrate their independence day on June 12, however.)

  • The winner is Dawson Hobbs, and here's his Swizzle Challenge: "The Tour de France just completed its first week of racing. Drug scandals have captured the headlines at the Tour in recent years but are in fact nothing new. The first scandal was sparked when two brothers abandoned the race and gave an interview in which they were quoted as saying "we keep going on dynamite" and revealed the use of cocaine, chloroform and other drugs by riders in the Tour. Name the brothers and the year." The 1st correct e-mailer wins the yellow jersey and gets to submit the next question.

NJ'S EARLY BIRD SPECIALS

SHOT...

"I think there's a natural evolution and arc to the conversation, and hopefully we'll get there at some point soon. But it's not for me to rush it or push it faster than others want to" -- Spitzer, asked if "there's a point where people need to stop talking about the scandal" that led to his resignation in '08 (Politico).

...CHASER

"Why are you late? Were you with a hooker?" -- An unidentified man at Spitzer's Union Square campaign appearance on Monday (New York Daily News).
