Man dies after Mesa police shooting near Mesa Drive and Brown Road

A shooting involving Mesa police officers left a man dead on Thursday afternoon.

According to a tweet from Mesa police, the shooting happened just before 2 p.m. near Mesa Drive and Brown Road. Police confirmed that a man, later identified as 20-year-old Ny'Kendreon Pride, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police believe that Pride could be connected to a string of recent armed robberies in the area. According to Mesa police, officers along with members of the U.S. Marshals Service's Arizona Wanted Task Force were in the area about 1:30 p.m. to look for an armed robbery suspect.

Police said Pride had a gun, but did not say whether he pointed the gun at officers.

No officers were hurt in the incident. No other details were released by the Mesa Police Department. It was unknown if anyone else was injured or what led to the shooting.

Police also advised that the intersection was expected to be shut down for several hours as the investigation was underway.
