Person of interest arrested in Exeter Township shooting

A Monroe County man is in custody after he was identified as a person of interest in a shooting that took place Monday in Exeter Township.

On Tuesday, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough requested assistance from the public in locating 38-year-old James Michael Pattenaude, a news release said. He was identified as a person of interest after multiple gunshots were fired into an occupied residence on Monday in the 13000 block of Martinsville Road in Exeter Township.

On Wednesday, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detectives developed information and located Pattenuade parked in a commercial business parking lot off Airport Highway and South Reynolds Road in Lucas County, Ohio, the release said. Detectives notified the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office and requested assistance. At approximately 3 p.m., Lucas County sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop Pattenaude and take him into custody. However, Pattenaude fled from the deputies as well as officers from the Toledo Police Department.

Pattenaude led the Ohio authorities on a pursuit which ultimately led them back to Monroe County, the release said. Monroe County sheriff's detectives and deputies joined the pursuit, which lasted for several miles until Pattenaude stopped at Memorial Highway at Head O Lake Road in Whiteford Township and fled on foot. Pattenaude was quickly taken into custody at that time.

Pattenaude was taken to the Monroe County Jail where he was lodged on a variety of criminal charges.

Eleven felony charges have been filed against Pattenaude: single counts of assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm at a building, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of ammunition by a felon and five counts of felony firearms. He was arraigned Thursday in Monroe County District Court. A probable cause conference is scheduled for June 6. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail on $785,000 in bonds on these charges and a probation violation charge, according to online jail records.

Monroe County deputies who responded to the shooting at about 3 a.m. Monday found the homeowner was inside his residence when he heard several gunshots that struck the front of his residence, a news release said. Immediately after, the homeowner observed a vehicle speed away from his residence. Detectives were called in to conduct the investigation and process the crime scene.

It was determined the homeowner and Pattenaude know each other. The shooting was not a random event, the sheriff's office said.

Multiple sheriff’s office deputies attempted to locate Pattenaude at a residence on Milwaukee Road in Milan Township but were unable to locate him there.

Goodnough said he thanks the public for the many tips received in the search for Pattenaude. He also acknowledged and thank the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office and the Toledo Police Department for their efforts in the pursuit and capture of Pattenaude. In addition, he said, the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office and the Perrysburg Township, Ohio, Police Department provided valuable assistance.

This case remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7530.
