Man, 34, arrested in Thursday morning shooting on Maplewood Avenue

LANSING — A 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with a shooting that injured another man Thursday morning in south Lansing, police said.

The suspect was located after police shut down a portion of West Malcolm X Street and three connecting side streets and staged for hours outside a house. But police wouldn't say where the man — earlier identified as a "person of interest" — was found.

The suspect's name was being withheld pending formal charges, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear.

The shooting happened shortly after 6 a.m. at a residence in the 1800 block of Maplewood Avenue, just north of East Mount Hope Avenue. Officers responded to a shots-fired call and found a man with "an apparent gunshot wound to the chest," Lansing police said in a news release

The man was listed in stable condition at a hospital on Thursday morning, police said. His age and hometown were not released.

Later Thursday morning, Lansing officers staged outside a house in the 1400 block of Malcolm X, just west of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and tried to communicate with someone inside.

After maneuvering an armored vehicle into position and shouting instructions over a megaphone for anyone inside to come out, officers apparently went inside the house. Soon after, they announced they had located the person of interest, but didn't say where the person was located.

Malcolm X was barricaded at Riverview Avenue, and the exit ramp from eastbound Interstate 496 to MLK was blocked off.

The Lansing Police Department in a release said officers responded to a report of shots fired about 6:10 a.m. in the 1800 block of Maplewood Avenue south of Mt. Hope Avenue.
