A Mississippi woman was shot Monday night after an altercation at the Extended Stay America Suites in Waukesha.

According to a Waukesha Police Department news release, officers responded to the motel, at 2520 Plaza Court, around 7:38 p.m. for reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, police found a female victim with a gunshot wound.

Police said they were able to learn that the victim, from Mississippi, was staying at the motel with a man from Texas who was in the area for work. While staying there, another female acquaintance of the man from Texas traveled to see the man with her four children in their late teens.

An altercation ensued, the release said. A firearm was dropped on the ground during the fight and the woman from Texas allegedly shot the victim from Mississippi in the leg before fleeing the scene. Upon arrival, an officer applied a tourniquet to the victim who later received advanced care from the Waukesha Fire Department.

Police said they subsequently arrested the suspect and another woman from Texas; officers also recovered the handgun reportedly used in the shooting. Police identified both suspects in the release but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is not naming them because no formal charges had been filed against them as of Tuesday morning.

Originally, reports indicated the incident involved an active shooter, but Waukesha Police Captain Dan Baumann said that was not the case.
