Perth Amboy, Sayreville police save woman from jumping off bridge
“Let me die” were the words a Perth Amboy police sergeant heard as he and two Sayreville police officers saved a woman from jumping off the Victory Bridge in Perth Amboy earlier this month.
The incident began in the evening Dec. 10 when a vehicle accident report came in from the bridge. Perth Amboy Police Sgt. Juan DeJesus arrived at the bridge at 6:26 p.m., where he found a parked car, according to city officials.
A nearby witness told DeJesus that a woman was about to jump off the bridge. DeJesus immediately stopped the woman from jumping as she resisted, repeating the words “let me die” and trying to break from DeJesus’s hold, city officials said.
Officers C. Mendes and K. Kryzanowski from the Sayreville Police Department soon arrived and helped DeJesus pull the woman back to safety.
EMS personnel then secured and cared for the woman before transporting her to the hospital. The woman revealed that she was dealing with the loss of her father and strained family relationships, according to city officials.
The investigation found that the car was not involved in an accident and that the woman had used it to climb over the railing of the bridge, city officials said.
