Peru's biggest LGBTQ disco gets a new look

Introducing: The LGBTQ+ disco selling groceries

Location: Lima

There will be no nighttime revelers

at Peru's biggest LGBTQ+ nightclub

and the dance floor will be filled

with shelves stocked with groceries

Valetodo Downtown's famed drag queen staff

will sell household products instead

as the space reopens as a market

while bars are ordered to stay closed

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) REGULAR NIGHTCLUB ATTENDEE, ALEXANDRA HERRERA, SAYING:

"Before, I used to come here to dance and have a good time, but now we come to buy. The thing is to reinvent yourself."

The club's 120 employees

missed dancing in vivid costumes

but some used their new roles

to get dressed up once again

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DRAG QUEEN, BELALUH MCQUEEN, SAYING:

"We're used to applause, to cheers, to the adrenaline, and from one day to the next, everything changed. Yes, at the beginning I felt very sad personally, I was very depressed because I have been doing this art for years, but you have to adapt to new challenges for the future."
