Peruvians call for President Castillo's resignation

STORY: Protests throughout Peru are continuing onto their second week against the spike in fuel and fertilizer prices as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“you have to understand that this is communism and if you don't go out to (fight for) your freedom, everything will be worse”, one protester said.

This crisis makes for a particularly vulnerable moment for Pedro Castillo's presidency, who rose to power last year with overwhelming support from Peru's rural population - the same group of people who are now staging the most significant protests so far during his administration.

Castillo has scrambled to come up with meaningful solutions. This week, he declared a curfew in Lima to stifle dissent, which thousands defied, taking to the streets in violent protests.

According to a poll published on Thursday, his approval ratings have dipped to 19%, a record low. He recently survived a second impeachment in less than a year in office.
