Peso Pluma cancels US show after cartel death threats over ‘loose tongue,’ reports say

Mexican artist Peso Pluma has canceled a concert in Indiana after receiving death threats from a cartel, news outlets report.

Pluma performed at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sept. 12, and several banners bearing threats against him were unfurled just hours earlier in Tijuana, Mexico, newspaper Punto Norte reported.

The banners were hung across four bridges in different parts of Tijuana, warning the singer not to attend a scheduled Oct. 14 concert in the city, the outlet reported.

“It will be your last performance because of your disrespectful loose tongue,” one banner read, according to Vice.

The threats were signed “CJNG,” the Spanish acronym for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

So far, Peso Pluma has not publicly responded to the threats and hasn’t said why his Sept. 16 Indianapolis show has been canceled.

Another Indianapolis concert has been postponed, according to Ticketmaster, as well as shows in Alabama, Wisconsin and Illinois.

The 24-year-old singer made his debut on U.S. television in April with a performance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and has continued rising in popularity since, earning 31 spots on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.

Fans expressed concern on social media over the threats, with some saying “it’s so over,” and others vowing to protect him.

Peso Pluma’s music ranges from love ballads and danceable hip-hop influenced singles, but some of his most popular songs are rooted in the narcocorrido genre — music focusing on the exploits and lifestyles of drug traffickers and cartels, Vice reported.

One song, “Siempre Pendientes,” features lyrics about Joaquin Guzman Loera, better known as El Chapo. Pluma performed this song on Sept. 10 in front of a massive crowd gathered for a two-day music festival in Mexico City, the outlet reported.

Tijuana’s mayor, Montserrat Caballero, said the Oct. 14 concert will still happen if Peso Pluma wants to perform, Telemundo reported. Caballero said normal security measures will be taken.
