A flea outbreak could be set to arrive in the UK later this month, causing irritation to dogs and cats.

The unusually hot weather, followed by severe heavy rain, has created an ideal breeding ground for the insects, which could be bad news for our pets.

According to Pets at Home, the tiny creatures are likely to land in the fur of dogs and cats later this month. Chief executive Peter Pritchard told the BBC: "In about three weeks' time, we will see a mass outbreak of fleas."

Symptoms of fleas include...

  • Hair loss

  • Spots

  • Redness

  • Pets scratching their skin

  • Humans may also notice scratching on the skin

Experts at the RSPCA have explained that some pets can be hypersensitive to flea saliva and may suffer an allergic reaction. They also remind us that, when looking for flea treatment, they might not all be suitable for every pet, so it's worth heading to the vet if you are unsure.

Owners are being advised to check their pets' fur with a fine-tooth comb. It's also important that any animal bed or favourite sleeping spots are also regularly cleaned, as these too can harbour unwanted pests.

Fleas can also cause itchy, red bites on humans, which may appear on your skin, especially around ankles and legs. While it's good to ensure your pet stays safe, following these tips from the RSPCA can help your whole household, too.

What to do if you suspect fleas

  1. If you spot fleas on your pet, treat it quickly as they can give your cat or dog tapeworms and diseases (make sure you worm your pet as well).

  2. Treat your home as well, as fleas can survive without a host for many months.

  3. Clean bedding regularly and vacuum furniture, floors and skirting boards to help destroy fleas at each stage of their lifecycle.

  4. Throw away the dust bag from your vacuum after each use.

  5. Maintain your pets' flea treatment all year round, as fleas aren't only active in summer.
