Pet Set: Valentine's Day offers many gifts for owners to spoil their dogs and cats

Joanna Woodruff and Herbert Roemmele’s rescue dog named Sophie, who Joanna says is “part poodle and many other parts,” is wearing her raincoat in case it rains as much as it did in January (which she hopes won’t happen.)

Valentine’s Day is coming up on Feb. 14, and of course, you’ll want to show your dog or cat how much you love them with a little gift. Like …

A Gucci pet tag in gold-toned brass with an engraved interlocking G for $230. You can put it on the tag of a Dior pet collar, which is available for $550. And of course, there’s a matching leash — for $1,000. (Gucci and Dior are both in Palm Beach.)

We all know that cats like to hide — but often we’d like to hide their litter boxes. There are a lot of attractive furniture available that masks litter boxes, so your cats can enter and use them and no one’s the wiser (except your cat). Go to Amazon.com and look up “cat litter storage furniture.”

Julie Hayek’s Sheena, a half Siamese-half Abyssinian 18-year-old, would like more fur for Valentine’s Day, since the one she’s sitting on is not enough for a well-dressed cat.

There are also dozens, maybe hundreds, of doggie beds out there, but one of the trendiest gifts this year is a doggie bed — for humans. They’re people-sized and big enough for you and your dogs (or cats, if they agree) to lie on the floor together. One company claims to have sold over 10,000, so apparently, it’s not a joke. Put “Human dog bed” into Amazon.com.

Many photographers will gladly take a photo of your dog or cat and some even specialize in pet portraits. But an interesting variation on this is a 12-by-12 handmade paper portrait inside a shadow box created by artist Nina Fusco from a photo of your pet. See the samples at nina3Dpaper.com.

The Palm Beach County Film & Television Commission produces many programs of local interest. Some appear on Florida PBS, as well as various commercial stations, and some are shown on their own site (see pbfilm.com) One new series is pet-related: “On the Town in the Palm Beaches,” with Frank Licari. Find details at southfloridapbs.org/on-the-town.

Among the many interesting segments are one on animal sculptures using wool as the medium; a brewery-dog park in West Palm Beach; and a Greyhound Sniffari Walk in Palm Beach. Enjoy!

Bibi’s Doggie Boutique, Palm Beach’s only luxury pet boutique, naturally has something special for your pet to wear on Valentine’s Day. Like their small-sized T-shirt available in red or black, saying: “Be My Valentine.” Bibi’s Boutique is in back of the via at 250 Worth Ave.

Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming has plenty of Valentine cookies made of peanut butter and granola. Choose everything from heart-shaped cookies with sprinkles on them to chocolate-covered strawberry ones. They all look good enough to eat — but DON’T. (It’s for your dog only.) 340 Royal Poinciana Way, No. 322A.
