Pet shelter says Miami dogs and cats can use a few gifts. Here’s how to help them

The animals at the pet shelter can use some help during the holidays.

Miami-Dade County is asking for donations of gifts for dogs and cats at its at-capacity pet shelter in Doral. From Dec. 1 through Jan. 31, the public is invited to pick up a present for a shelter pet while holiday shopping.

The Miami-Dade Animal Services Pet Adoption & Protection Center, 3599 NW 79th Ave., is “facing an overpopulation crisis” with over 800 pets that urgently need adopters and foster parents, the county’s animal services department said Dec. 1 in a news release. Miami-Dade County Animal Services ceased accepting pet surrenders or healthy stray animals to ensure the optimal care of the shelter’s cats and dogs.

“By donating pet beds, blankets, toys, and treats to our shelter pets, you can directly make their shelter stay more comfortable and make their journey towards finding forever families more enjoyable,” said Animal Services Director Annette Jose.

Donation bins will be available at the Doral shelter and at County Hall, the Stephen P. Clark Center at 111 NW First St. in downtown Miami.
