Pete’s Bagels will open all-day cafe in Ybor City

TAMPA — Big news for bagel fans: St. Petersburg’s Pete’s Bagels is crossing the bay and opening a new location in Ybor City early next year.

The new spot, called simply “Pete’s,” will function as both a bagel shop and an all-day cafe, serving sandwiches, salads and afternoon snacks as well as beer and wine, said owner Steven Peterman.

Peterman and his wife, Sara, launched their bagel and general store concept in 2019 in St. Petersburg’s Historic Uptown neighborhood. Together with co-founder Erica Gonzalez, the team moved to a larger location in the Grand Central District in 2021, and the shop has since become one of the city’s most popular bagel and breakfast spots.

Peterman said the new location, at 1804 E Fourth Ave., was developed by Ybor City real estate investor Darryl Shaw and will act as a sort of community center and hub for the neighborhood — a place where people can grab coffee and a bagel in the morning or meet friends for a leisurely happy hour later in the day. The spot will also host frequent community-focused events each month.

“We’re really excited,” Peterman said. “The building is so beautiful … and it really seems like there are so many new things opening in Ybor.”

The new cafe occupies a white, two-story house with a long wraparound porch overlooking the new Friends of Ybor dog park, which is opening Saturday. Pete’s will occupy the bottom portion of the building and feature an airy indoor cafe with a walk-up window (inspired by the window at the original St. Pete location) as well as ample outdoor seating.

Peterman and his team are eyeing spring for an opening, but don’t have an exact date just yet.
