Pete Buttigieg's husband Chasten weighs in after Trump aide touts Pence's meeting with Irish PM and partner

WASHINGTON – A Trump administration official faced a backlash on Twitter Monday after defending Mike Pence's record on LGBT issues by highlighting the vice president's planned meeting with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, the first openly gay elected leader of Ireland.

Earlier Monday, the official, deputy White House press secretary Judd Deere, had posted a section of the vice president's schedule on Twitter.

"For all of you who still think our @VP is anti-gay, I point you to his and the @SecondLady’s schedule tomorrow where they will join Taoiseach @LeoVaradkar and his partner Dr. Matthew Barrett for lunch in Ireland," Deere wrote.

Particularly pointed criticism came from Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of presidential candidate and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

"I've sat at tables who would gladly deny me the right to marry, who openly support conversion therapy, and who adamantly believe being gay is a choice," Buttigieg wrote on Twitter. "Doesn't mean they're any less homophobic because we shared a meal."
