Pete Carroll confirms Seahawks have talked with Cam Newton

The Seattle Seahawks seem content to ride with Geno Smith as their starting quarterback while Russell Wilson is on the injured reserve list. The team has done some due diligence on a couple of free agent quarterbacks, though. Last week it was reported that Seattle held a work out with Blake Bortles. Bortles has knowledge of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron’s scheme and 73 career starts to his name, but there are apparently no plans to sign him at this time.

Also, coach Pete Carroll just confirmed in his radio appearance on ESPN 710 AM that the Seahawks have talked with Cam Newton.

Newton says he was recently vaccinated, answering one of several questions worth asking about him if he’s under serious consideration. The former league MVP has also dealt with multiple throwing-shoulder surgeries and a serious foot injury in recent years.

Last season, Newton got off to a strong start with the Patriots, including an awesome duel with Russell Wilson in Week 2. Newton finished the year with 12 rushing touchdowns but his passing numbers were brutal, even considering the total lack of talent at wide receiver he had to work with.

The window in which it makes sense for the Seahawks to sign Newton is likely very narrow. Unless they sign him soon Smith will be starting next Monday night against the Saints, then there’s only one more game on the schedule before Wilson is eligible to return to the active roster and Jacksonville should be beatable no matter who is under center.
