Dr. Peter Pronovost, a renowned researcher and physician executive known for his life-saving improvements in patient safety, will be the next featured speaker for Northeast Ohio Medical University's monthly health leadership series put on in collaboration with University Hospitals.

The presentation, put on as part of NEOMED's VITALS Visionary Health Leadership in Action speaker series, will take place at noon Thursday via Zoom.

Pronovost is known for his work leveraging checklists for his staff to use while caring for patients, which was shown to drastically reduce bloodstream infections and ultimately saved thousands of lives.

This intervention has been implemented across the U.S., and as a result, central line-associated infections that used to kill as many people as breast or prostate cancer have been reduced by 80%, according to a biography on NEOMED's website.

In 2008, he both received a MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" and was named on TIME magazine's "100 most influential people in the world" list.

Dr. Pronovost is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. He has founded several technology companies and is a thought leader informing U.S. and global health policy, according to NEOMED's website. He also has more than 1,200 peer-reviewed publications.

He currently serves as chief clinical transformation officer at University Hospitals Health System and is a professor in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

The VITALS series is free and open to the public. Continuing education credits are available for medical professionals who attend. Full details can be found at neomed.edu/vitals.

Each month, VITALS features a diverse range of approaches by leaders in the medical sector. Past speakers include Dr. Karen Knudsen, president of the American Cancer Society, and Dr. Frank Papay, chairman of dermatology and plastic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic who led the surgical team that conducted America’s first face transplant.

The 2023-24 VITALS schedule includes prominent leaders such as Dr. Amy Acton, former director of the Ohio Department of Health, and Dr. Nina F. Schor, deputy director for Intramural Research at the National Institutes of Health.
