Peters Valley student art show returning in February after year off due to COVID

SANDYSTON — The Peters Valley high school student art show is back and will be held from Feb. 5-27 at the Sally Francisco Art Gallery at Peters Valley School of Craft.

The exhibit showcases the work of high school students from the region and features two- and three-dimension work in various media. A reception honoring the students artists will be held at the gallery from 3-5 p.m., Feb. 5.

This is the 10th year of the art show. It was canceled last year due to the pandemic. Featured will be work from high school students from Newton, Wallkill Valley Regional, Fort Lee, Watchung Hills, High Point Regional, Delaware Valley and Roxbury.

The work includes ceramics, painting, photography, collage, textiles, jewelry, as well as mixed-media sculptures.

Galley Director Erika Hewston said Peters Valley's mission is to "cultivate the next generation of fine craft artists and supporters. By hosting this exhibition we are encouraging young artists to not only make, but share their work with the world in a professional gallery setting."

Hewston said the work on exhibit "is representative of the creative power of our local youth."

As with past shows, the school will award a Huber-Weyer Scholarship to the "Best in Show" winner with certificates for second and third-place finishers. The tuition covers the cost of attending one of the School of Crafts annual courses.

In addition, Peters Valley will award additional scholarships to students who display at the Teens Arts Festival and Wallkill Valley Invitational Art Show. Students are also invited to apply for other scholarships directly on the school's website.

The website also includes information on the School of Craft's full range of on-site and online courses in fields ranging from woodworking to photography and from working with fabrics to blacksmithing.

The Gallery at Peters Valley School of Craft is located at 19 Kuhn Road at the intersection with Sussex County Route 615 within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Facial masks are required to enter the gallery.

Peters Valley also offers an outreach program to schools called Craftsmen at Work. The program brings multiple professional artists to school for demonstrations and has reached more than 40,000 students since it opened in 1987.
