Petersburg man ID'ed as victim killed when pick-up ran embankment and crashed on I-295

ENON — Chesterfield Police have identified the person killed last week when a pick-up truck went over an embankment and crashed onto Interstate 295.

Kenneth L. Piggee, 54, of Petersburg, died instantly in the Aug. 11 crash that took place on I-295 near the Meadowville Road overpass, police said Monday. He was a passenger in the Toyota Tundra that was forced off the road while attempting to pass a tractor-trailer on Meadowville Road.

The driver of the pick-up truck remains hospitalized.

According to police reports, the Tundra was hauling a trailer toward the bridge and attempted to pass the truck on a double-yellow line when an oncoming vehicle forced it back into its initial lane. As it moved back into the lane, the Tundra clipped the tractor-trailer, forcing it over a guardrail and down the embankment before crashing and overturning on the southbound side of I-295.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
