Petersburg nonprofit hosts Ball in the 'Burg: Dress as superhero, fictional or real-life

PETERSBURG — The Historic Petersburg Foundation [HPF] will host its Ball in the 'Burg event next month. Dine, dance and raise a glass to help raise funds that will allow the organization to continue preserving Petersburg’s historic structures.

In 2019, I attended the 14th Ball in the 'Burg. The theme was "The Magical Mystery Ball." Numerous attendees dressed in Beatles/British attire. It was bloody good fun!

The "Moonlight Magic Ball" in 2020 resulted in a variety of space creatures and travelers, celestial gods and goddesses and astronaut attendees. The costume contest winners were Dino Lunsford as the Man in the Moon and Kena Treadway as a “Trekkie."

This year, the 16th Ball in the 'Burg has a meaningful theme. As post-pandemic life continues to return to normal, HPF wants to honor those who have worked to keep us healthy and safe over the last two years by adopting the theme of "HEROES."

"Open to interpretation, the theme could include anyone from real-life jobs like public safety, military or health care professionals to fictional superheroes," Kyle Tucker, HPF President, said. "Ticket holders may dress in costume, semi-formal or formal attire or whatever is most comfortable and theme appropriate."

The 2022 Ball in the 'Burg will feature a costume contest with prizes, a raffle, a silent auction and dancing with live music [TBD].

Dinner, wine, beer and a few cocktail choices are included with the ticket price. I have no idea what is on the menu this year, but when I attended the Ball at the Country Club of Petersburg, it was delicious. I did not walk away hungry. Actually, I was pretty stuffed! LOL!

Whether you dress as a nurse, firefighter, teacher, police officer, "Superman," "Batman" or your next-door neighbor, you will be helping preserve historic Petersburg. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased at BallintheBurg2022.eventbrite.com.

For information about group tables, donating auction items and sponsorship opportunities email historicpetersburgfoundation@verizon.net. Platinum, gold, silver and bronze sponsorships ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 include an invitation to the pre-Ball reception.

According to HPF, ticket sales for the 15th Ball were at record levels several days before the event and had to be capped due to space restrictions at the Club.

“It was a nice problem to have," Louis Malon, former HPF president, said. "We had a lot of new and younger people attend which was especially good to see."

The HPF has been sharing Petersburg preservation success stories since 1967, and they strive to keep on telling them. Visit historicpetersburg.org to learn more about the nonprofit.

The "HEROES" Ball will be held in a new venue, the Petersburg Public Library Conference and Event Center, on Saturday, September 24 from 6 - 11:30 p.m. at 201 West Washington Street.

"We're thrilled to host this event in the heart of Petersburg," Justin Sarafin, HPF Executive Director, said. "Come help support and rally around heroes from the community. Party for Preservation!"

I may whip out my "Wonder Woman" costume for this affair. Hope to see you there!
