Petersburg Police: 23-year-old city man shot to death in his car on West Washington Street

PETERSBURG — Police say a man who died after crashing his car on West Washington Street early Thursday morning had been shot, according to Petersburg Police.

Deputy Chief Emanuel Chambliss identified the victim as Wayne Leon Tucker Jr., 23, of Petersburg. He had been shot several times and died at the scene.

An online obituary indicated Tucker was known by the nickname "Fats."

The incident was reported shortly before 1 a.m. in the 1500 block of West Washington Street near its intersection with Atlantic Street. Residents of the area reported hearing shots fired and a car crash.

When officers responded, they found Tucker's car had run into a telephone pole. Police obtained video surveillance from the scene that reportedly showed gunmen shooting at the car.

Tucker's death is the eighth homicide being investigated by Petersburg Police. A ninth person was shot to death Easter Sunday on Interstate 85 near Squirrel Level Road in Petersburg, but that investigation is being handled by the Virginia State Police.
