PETERSBURG - Councilwoman Treska Wilson-Smith wins WRIC's Remarkable Women contest. Petersburg's Ward 1 representative is honored to have been nominated and elated to have been chosen.

Nominations were sought out by 8News for women who make a difference in self achievement, community contribution and family impact.

"I owe and give God the credit from my life," Wilson-Smith said.

The song "I Am Woman" written by Australian musicians Helen Reddy and Ray Burton inspires Wilson-Smith.

"My father used to play a song every time we got into the car and it would always make me feel empowered as a woman. The song was by Helen Reddy, 'I Am Woman,' Wilson-Smith shared. "I still love it today."

After I discovered Wilson-Smith had been added to the Remarkable Women of Richmond list, I asked her who she would nominate for the honor. Loving and admiring different women for different reasons, she provided numerous names and professions.

"Being a woman is not a hindrance. It is being a power-packed machine capable of anything and everything," Wilson-Smith exclaimed proudly.
