Peterson: Iowa State's overtime victory over Oklahoma State snaps long Big 12 road losing streak

STILLWATER, Okla. – Wednesday was one of those games in which Iowa State’s offense compensated for most of what lacked on the defensive end, and thank goodness for the Cyclones it did.

On this night Iowa State needed every bit of offense it could get, during an 84-81 overtime victory against Oklahoma State inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. Yes, Iowa State found its shooting touch. The victory not only snapped a stretch of four losses in five games, but the streak is over.

Wednesday’s victory ended a streak of 24 losses in a row on the floor of a Big 12 opponent.

Here’s the nitty gritty of the overtime: Iowa State had the ball and an 82-79 lead with 1:03 left in the overtime. Tyrese Hunter turned the ball over on a cross-over move with 27.3 left, then Avery Anderson pulled Oklahoma State within 82-81 with two free throws with 19.7 to play.

Another Iowa State turnover, this one by Brockington, gave the ball to Oklahoma State with 15.4 seconds remaining.

Offensive goal tending on Oklahoma State, after a very long review, returned possession to Iowa State with 12 seconds left.

Tre Jackson was fouled with 11.3 left. He made both free throws, and Iowa State led by three.

Oklahoma State missed two desperation three-point shots.

Neither team was able to pull away during a game in which the lead switched sides 27 times.

Gabe Kalscheur had a chance to tie the score for what would have been a 15th time, but he missed two free throws with a chance to knot the game with 1:21 to play.

A few seconds later, he drew an offensive foul with 5.4 seconds remaining, giving Iowa State a chance with the score tied at 70.

The Cyclones had the ball out of bounds at three-quarters court. Kalscheur inbounded the ball under heavy pressure to Tyrese Hunter, who lost the ball out of bounds.

Now it was Oklahoma State’s turn with 3.1 seconds left and the length of the court to go. Avery Anderson had a chance to win, but his shot from 22 feet bounced off the rim, sending Iowa State into its first overtime game this season.
