Petoskey council OKs construction projects for Winter Sports Park

PETOSKEY — Several upcoming renovation projects are scheduled to take place at the Winter Sports Park.

On Monday, the Petoskey City Council approved two contracts for work projects at the park, including a new roof and new windows.

“We’ve got a couple exciting projects coming up,” said city manager Shane Horn.

The first approval was for roof replacements at both the Winter Sports Park lodge and the concession stand at Bates Park. ASAP Roofing of Gaylord was awarded the contract in the amount of $70,690.

Kendall Klingelsmith, director of Parks and Recreation for the city, said this project was rebid from earlier in the year because the first round saw only one bid which exceeded $150,000.

Both of the roofs will be changed to standing seam metal, which will replace the original asphalt shingle material.

“This makes me feel good because we can get metal roofs, which I think is a great standard,” Klingelsmith said. “It’s a classy standard. It’s a 50-year standard.”

Klingelsmith also noted that the work will include additional gutter systems to better manage the roof runoff.

The second approval was for a project to replace the windows and entrance doors at the Winter Sports Park lodge. This project was also rebid as it did not receive any bids in the first round.

“This is going to be a great project,” Klingelsmith said. “It’s going to provide efficiency. Some of these windows we can’t even close. I was out there (Monday) sitting on the bench by the windows and you can feel the breeze, you feel the cold air coming in.”

The project also includes the installation of automatic door openers and panic bars, so the building will be ADA compliant.

The city had previously been awarded a $20,000 energy efficiency grant through EGLE to help offset the costs of this project.

Gordon Construction Services Inc. of Petoskey was awarded the contract in the amount of $137,722.
