Petoskey Department of Public Safety improves its ISO rating

PETOSKEY — The Petoskey Department of Public Safety recently went through an International Organizationfor Standardization (ISO) review process.

According to a press release from the department, this process assesses many aspects of fire protection capabilities. Some of the data necessary to evaluate a community’s ISO rating includes available manpower, training hours, water supply, dispatch requirements, response time and equipment.

Through this process, the Petoskey Department of Public Safety improved its ISO rating from a 4 to a 3.

According to Director Adrian Karr, this could mean a reduction in insurance premiums. Insurance companies use ISO ranking information to help establish fair premiums for fire insurance. By improving the ISO rating from a 4 to a 3, residents could see a reduction in their insurance premiums.

“Improving effectiveness is always a large priority for members of our department," Karr said. "By improving our quality of service, our residents should not only feel confident in our dedication to their safety, they may also get some direct relief in their checkbooks. It is a win-win!”

Karr credits Lt. David Schultz, PSO Karl Fritz, PSO Erik Hoig, and Marty Flynn of the city’s water department, who spent numerous hours collecting and providing data for this process.
