Petoskey District Library awarded grants in support of tutoring program

PETOSKEY — The Petoskey District Library was the recent recipient of two grants: a $6,000 grant from Hestia Women’s Giving Circle, and a $24,960 by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library of Michigan (LOM).

Aligned with the library's mission to nurture knowledge, drive discovery and connect community, these grants will support the Growing Readers Together program, a partnership between the library and the Public Schools of Petoskey. Growing Readers Together, which is now starting its fifth year this fall, is a three-pronged approach to supporting children in their reading quest: direct tutoring for students and monthly Family Literacy Nights to help families learn more skills to support their student’s achievements.

One-on-one tutoring for students in need takes place at the library throughout the week, all year long. School trained reading tutors are matched with students in grades K-3 who are in need of reading support. Officials said by planning the tutoring programming at the public library instead of the school, families may be more inclined to participate because it is a less intimidating environment.

“We are so pleased that Growing Readers Together continues to support our young students and their families accomplished with support from Hestia, IMLS, LOM and the community,” said Val Meyerson, library director.
